Michael graduated with a Bachelor of Physiotherapy (Credit) in 2008 from the University of Otago School of Physiotherapy. During his studies he had the opportunity to gain further experience in multiple private practices and the chronic pain management clinic at Burwood Hospital, where he found his true passion in Physiotherapy.
Michael has worked in private practice in New Zealand and Australia. Having competed in multiple sports including Athletics, Rugby, Judo and Swimming, he has experienced his own fair share of injuries in pursuit of performance. This has given him good insight into the impact this can have on a person, pushing them “into the negatives” Michaels personal motto has therefore become to first get his patients “out of the negatives and back to zero” before ultimately “getting them into the positives”. This ultimately means to help you become more resilient and therefore less likely to reinjure.
Michael is a keen follower of sport and this interest has led him down a sports physiotherapy pathway. He has worked closely with teams and individual athletes in many different sports providing game day coverage, team triage, and injury rehabilitation working with the patient, Coaches, Strength and Conditioning, Medical staff and other parties to return them to the field. Working in sports has also afforded Michael the opportunity to travel internationally with teams, providing exciting and unique challenges to patient management.
Working with contact sports has meant treating concussion and its myriad of symptoms. Michael has undertaken further study in this area of physiotherapy and enjoys the complex assessment and management that is sometimes required to help patients recover and return to normal life post-concussion.
Michael also has further interests in Clinical Pilates, Dry Needling and the McKenzie approach to treating spinal pain.
Michael has attained his black belt in the martial art of Judo requiring dedication, perseverance and discipline. He enjoys treating fellow martial artists as he understands the dedication required to pursue their art.
Michael and his lovely wife enjoy traveling and spending time hiking and reading on the beach.
